Description
An account of the resource
This collection is composed of igneous volcanic and intrusive rocks from the St. Francois Mountains of Missouri. The variation within the collection can be used to explain the geologic history of the area. The St. Francois Mountains batholith was formed by granitic intrusions into Precambrian rhyolites, tuffs, and breccias. Then basalt, diabase, and porphyritic intrusions cut the granitoids.

(FM) Flysch Stratigraphic Suite -- Molasse Basin, Switzerland
Description
An account of the resource
Flysch is dominantly a turbidite succession, alternating sandstone and shale 100mm to rarely 100m in syntectonic accumulations. With a rising landmass shedding clastic debris into "deep" troughs, oversteepening of sediments along the shelf or actual tilting of the shell initiated turbidity currents flows deeper into the marine basin. There may be hundreds of these units in a given section. Nappes then over rode the soft sediments, locally producing strong deformational structures in the flysch sediments. <br /><br />The nappes shed their debris into fresh marine environments in great fans with large accumulations of coarse conglomerates. A molasse section may be a thousand meters thick. Molasse comprises a clastic sedimentary succession in a post-tectonic environment. <br /><br />Flysch and molasse both have sedimentatlogical as well as tectonic implications associated with their appearance in an outcrop.  <br /><br />Dr. Trumpy at the Geological Institute in Zurich suggested specific localities for collecting and arranged for Dr. Hanspeter and Mr. Freeman to take me into the field on successive days. Later, Mr. Freeman spent several days in order to procure this suite. <br /><br />A set of kodachrome slides is available and should be used with the specimens to put the rocks into relationships seen in the field. There are 11 slide specimens. All slide specimens were photographed in PPL and XPL.

Description
An account of the resource
The Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State are underlain by approximately 20,000 square miles of complexly deformed, high grade metamorphic rocks which are believed to represent a southern outlier of the much larger Grenville Province.The Adirondacks can be divided into the "Lowlands" and the "Highlands" . The Lowlands comprise the northwestern quarter of the belt and are characterized by amphibolite facies metamorphism. The Highlands appear to consist entirely of granulite facies rocks. All rocks in this suite have been collected from the Highlands and predominantly from the southern quarter of the Adirondacks.
This suite of rocks is designed to be representative of the Highlands in general. Therefore it includes both metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks. The latter are very common throughout the Adirondacks and contain the often-discussed anorthosite-charnockite suite of rocks. Almost all rocks in the Adirondack Highlands are strongly foliated. This is the result of intense polyphase deformation that has affected this area.

An account of the resource
Minerals found in the calcsilicate facies contain quartz, diopside, enstatitic pyroxene, tremolite, calcite, and phlogopite. However, only a few thin sections have been found to contain all phases. In some specimens, the pyroxene is close to 100% enstatite. The assemblage may be due to the reaction tremolite=diopside+ enstatite + quartz +fluid. This reaction discussed by Boyd, "Hydrothermal Investigations of Amphiboles," in Abelson, p.377-396.

Fresh surfaces contain grey-white, anhedral calcite and dolomite crystals. Weathered surfaces are dark brown, with a fine powder observable after handling in hand sample. Bubbles from acid reaction turn dark brown on weathered surfaces. These weathered bubbles leave behind a brown residue. Bubbles on fresh faces remain white and leave no residue. (FOV: 1.28)

Description
An account of the resource
The Powderhorn (Iron Hill) Carbonatite is located in Gunnison County in about the center of the southwestern quadrant of Colorado. It is a pear-shaped body which is essentially conical at depth, and is exposed over an area of about 12 square miles. The carbonatite body covers about 2 and a half square miles; About 70 percent of the in pyroxenite which was subsequently intruded by or replaced by nepheline and melilite-bearing rocks; magnetite-perovskite, and carbonatite.
